BC's Lost Oyster: The Rise, Fall, and Return of the Olympia

Ask a British Columbian about local oysters and they'll picture the Pacific oyster — the big, ruffled Crassostrea gigas served raw at Fanny Bay and beyond. But the Pacific is an immigrant. BC has exactly one native oyster, and its story explains both how this coast's shellfish industry came to be and why restorationists are fighting to bring the original back.
The native: Ostrea lurida
The Olympia oyster (Ostrea lurida) is the only oyster native to the west coast of North America, with a natural range running from BC's central coast (around Gale Passage, ~52°N) all the way south to Baja California. It's small — rarely bigger than a fifty-cent piece — but sweet, and it once formed extensive beds across the estuaries of the Salish Sea.
Indigenous peoples harvested Olympias for millennia. A landmark 2022 study in Nature Communications (Reeder-Myers et al.) documented sustainable Indigenous oyster fisheries persisting for thousands of years across North American coasts — including a Tseshaht First Nation village site in BC whose shell midden spans roughly a thousand years of continuous harvest. Recent University of Victoria archaeological work at the Lekwungen village of Kosapsom (in what is now Victoria) has examined dozens of assemblages containing Olympia oysters, reconstructing how abundant and widespread they were before colonization. First Nations used the meat for food and the shells for ornamentation; villages were often sited beside the beds.
The crash
European commercial exploitation began around 1850 in Puget Sound and escalated ferociously: harvest climbed from about 10,000 bushels a year in the 1850s to roughly 130,000 bushels by 1890. Dredging ripped up the beds themselves — the accumulated shell that new oysters need to settle on — and by 1915 the commercial harvest was nearly nonexistent. In BC, settlers harvested commercially from the early 1800s until stocks were depleted by the early 1930s.
Pollution finished what dredging started. The sulfite pulp mill at Shelton, Washington, discharged untreated waste liquor into Oakland Bay from 1927; oyster setting ended, adults died, and production fell 57% by 1933. Overharvest, habitat destruction, and industrial pollution — the same triple blow that has erased an estimated 85% of oyster reef habitat globally.
Today, the Olympia oyster survives in BC at stable but much-reduced levels, scattered across sites like Baynes Sound and Victoria's Gorge Waterway. COSEWIC has designated it a species of Special Concern, and it was listed under Canada's Species at Risk Act in 2003, with a federal management plan in place since 2009 and DFO index-site monitoring running annually.
The immigrant: Crassostrea gigas
With the native fishery collapsing, the industry looked to Japan. Pacific oysters were first brought to BC in 1912–1913, with large-scale seed importation beginning in 1925 — about four million seed by 1932, most planted in Ladysmith Harbour, where successful natural reproduction was recorded within a few years. By 1936 they had spread beyond the harbour.
BC waters are mostly too cold for Pacific oysters to breed reliably, so Pendrell and Hotham Sounds became the coast's natural seed sources, later overtaken by hatchery production. (One poignant thread in this history: Japanese-Canadian grower Eikichi Kagetsu was importing Japanese seed in the late 1920s before his internment during the Second World War.) Baynes Sound seeding began around 1947, and today the Pacific oyster is BC's commercial oyster industry — the one that drives the roughly $180-million-a-year shellfish economy of places like Baynes Sound.
Notably, Pacific oysters don't form true reefs in BC — our cold water limits wild recruitment, and nearly all production is cultured. But elsewhere, from the Netherlands' Oosterschelde to the Wadden Sea, introduced C. gigas has proven itself an aggressive reef-builder, carpeting hard substrates at up to 90% cover. Reef-building is what oysters do, given the chance.
Why the old story matters now
The Olympia oyster's arc — from Indigenous stewardship measured in millennia, to industrial collapse measured in decades — is the Salish Sea's cautionary tale. But it's also becoming a redemption story.
